Adjust to saturated monochrome and polychromatic hues—its photos by Holly Hunt new Collection forward signal a bold shift for the established Chicago furniture brand, part of the Knoll universe since 2014 and the Miller Knoll complex since 2021. The natural finishes of the straight sideboards and muted tones of the moderately plush sofas have long been replaced with the boutique manufacturer’s lauting surfacesleek stool and the porous texture of the dimple from forged metal tables.
Marking the seasoned talent of Chris Eitel appointed Design Director of Holly Hunt, the freshly imagined 9-piece nods to the sculptural audacity of the Vladimir Kagan Design Group, for which he additionally serves as Executive Creative Director. Eitel spent years training with the sister brand’s late namesake—an ever-challenging giant of American design—but also developed his own vocabulary.
Onward appears to have emerged as a fusion of style and ambition, but, as the name suggests, heralds something entirely nascent. It’s neoclassical, unexpectedly space-age in proportions, but still demonstrates Holly Hunt’s commitment to uncompromising quality, refined luxury and timeless design. To ensure the effectiveness of this cohesive venture, Eitel worked closely with SVP and Executive Creative Director Jo Annah Kornak and their in-house team.
“The front represents a defining moment,” he said. “He embodies the design studio’s ambition and illuminates the path ahead. Each piece is designed to make a statement, created to command attention and play the hero in any room. This collection stays true to the brand’s DNA while offering Chris’ fresh new perspective.”
ZWhile the entirely handcrafted Isley sofa balances the clean profile of a textured solid wood base and a firm seat and back, the apt Selina Slipper chair has gentle curves and archetypal determination. Its fluid upholstery complements a carved solid wood frame that, with an open and light silhouette, takes on unexpected proprietary dimensions. The Lucius console is clad in a distinctive ring-cut veneer and has an elongated lacquered base. As with the nine pieces, the design is meant to cut a striking figure, to be the star of a show, regardless of the style of the interior. The Dent Cabinet is defined by a rhythmic pattern of recessed forms that imbue it with both visual and visceral brilliance. Even the lesser Yoel Stool lacquer finish takes the cake.
“Every iconic design brand reaches a moment when it must reinterpret its legacy in order to continue building it … further,” said Eitel. “Onward is playful, vibrant and the start of something exciting and fresh – a new era for the brand. It captures the spirit of Holly Hunt through a modern lens and proves that a renowned design house can evolve without losing its soul.”
