haven of dreams, a cinematic monument of the imagination
Based on a convergence of ritual, technology and speculative storytelling, The Sanctuary of Dreams by Pierre-Christophe Gam it is a multi-sensory, participatory one installation roots in African philosophies of circular time and ancestral memory. It functions as a collective framework for imagining the future and is developed within the larger universe of Toguna World to reactivate dreaming as a shared cultural practice rather than an individual act.
Conceived as a hybrid “digital temple”, the travel project merges virtual reality, film, music and spatial design in a participatory environment where visitors are invited to envision alternative realities guided by their own desires.
In an ethereal inflatable structure Inspired by nomadic desert scenes, guests kick off their shoes and enter a contemplative space. Here, a 44-minute art film unfolds across three screens, combining experimental animation, soundscapes, collages and archival textures. The atmosphere is meditative and sacred, transcending linear time and inviting participants to reflect on how we might eat, play, pray, dream and love in a future reimagined through collective dreams.

Toguna World houses the collective dream in an ethereal temple
After the screening, a guided reflection and storytelling session allows participants to express their visions for the future. These responses are being archived as part of The Global Mapping of Dreams, a continent-wide research initiative covering Africa and the diaspora. Developed by artist Pierre-Christophe Gam’s Toguna World during a fellowship at the MIT Open Documentary Lab and the European Digital deal, previously at Onassis Stegis, Athens and first presented at Ars Electronica, The Sanctuary of Dreams transforms the artistic experience into an urban ritual to reclaim the future. The booth features a metal frame (6m x 6m x 4m), adjustable ambient lighting and aroma diffusion system, floor seating on modular cushions, a large screen with surround sound and voice guidance via the artist avatar.
