You can say goodbye to the salts on the shower walls: use this ingredient that you already have at home

Opaque shower walls full of white marks are one of those household problems that seem impossible to solve.

You scrub, you use expensive products, you wear with the sponge and after a few days the salts are already there, as if you had done nothing. The good news is that it doesn’t need power or aggressive chemistry.

You just need to understand how salt works and use the right ingredient, one that you almost certainly already have in your kitchen. The solution is simpler than you think, and once you learn it, you’ll never go back.

Limestone is afraid of acids

Limestone is mainly composed of calcium carbonate, a mineral deposit that forms whenever water evaporates on the surface of the glass. In the shower the problem is compounded by hot water and soap residue, which creates a solid layer that is difficult to remove mechanically. Vigorous scrubbing doesn’t solve anything: on the contrary, it risks scratching the glass and making the surface even more porous, favoring future build-up.

The secret is in the chemistry: limestone dissolves on contact with acids, and white vinegar – which you surely have in your cupboard – is perfect for this purpose. Just pour it into a spray bottle, apply it to dull spots and leave it on for at least 15 minutes without touching anything. During this time, the vinegar penetrates the microdeposits and weakens them from the inside. After the exposure time, a warm water rinse and a light wipe with a microfiber cloth is often enough to restore the shiny glass.

The DIY paste to polish and prevent limescale

If the salts are too stubborn or the walls have not been completely cleaned with vinegar alone, you can prepare a paste with three ingredients you already have at home: four tablespoons of baking soda, three of dishwashing detergent and two of classic white toothpaste. Mixed together, these ingredients create a cream that cleans deeply without scratching. Dishwashing detergent dissolves soap and cosmetic residues, toothpaste gently polishes glass, and bicarbonate helps remove surface contaminants with light mechanical action.

Apply the paste with a soft sponge or microfiber cloth, using circular motions and leave it on for about ten minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and dry immediately with a towel. The most effective gesture to prevent scale from forming again is just that: squeezing after every shower, a habit that takes less than thirty seconds but completely changes the result over time. No more streaks, no more harsh products, no more hours of scrubbing.
