Balancing nature and urban life: Orchestra Park it functions as both an oasis of green and a gathering hub, where engagement with the environment and daily activities coexist in a unified landscape. Carefully calibrated and thoughtfully designed, the park meets the complex challenge of being both a natural sanctuary and an active public space—especially in high-density urban areas, where the residual spaces between infrastructure and residential fabric often remain undefined.
Orchestra Park, designed by SoBA in the Huaqiao Economic Development Zone of Kunshan, East China, meets exactly this context, transforming an urban plot of 8,500 sq.m. located between two residential communities and at the confluence of two waterways in a captivating urban park.

The official inspiration, according to the studio, comes from the Chinese musical tradition “Jiangnan Silk and Bamboo”, known for its elegant and flowing melodies and recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of Kunshan. In this work, the rhythm and softness of the music are translated into spatial terms: curved lines and curved geometries structure pathways and environments, creating a continuous and dynamic landscape.
Seen from above, the park evokes the sudden movement of a coiled snake, inspiring both awe and curiosity. Rather than treating location constraints as constraints, SoBA he embraced these as opportunities, integrating mature trees – including camphor and dawn redwoods – and the existing ecosystem into a conservation-focused strategy that protects the forest and rolling terrain while introducing selective interventions.
This approach, summed up as “minimum intervention, maximum impact”, is particularly evident along the riverside greenbelt, where the design respectfully enhances the existing ecosystem. A waterside observation platform and meandering paths under the tree canopy extend usability without altering the physical layout.
A circular path organizes and optimizes the entire park, connecting Xugongqiao Street, the main access route, with residential communities to the north and south. More than a walking or jogging path, it acts as the backbone of the park, guiding visitors and making traffic legible. At the same time, it defines two main areas: along the river, the green belt preserves the natural character of the site with shaded paths and observation platforms. in the more active recreational zone, the existing topography accommodates specially designed spaces such as skatepark, climbing areas, playground, outdoor theater, bamboo grove paths, a plaza with a musical fountain and a small music classroom, creating a stimulating environment for visitors of all ages.
In the recreation zone, abstract geometries inspired by musical instruments transform the terrain into a three-dimensional landscape that encourages social interaction. Children, teenagers and adults can share the spaces without strict divisions between activities, achieving a balance between nature and use. Along the riverbank, the experience is more introspective: paths weave under the canopy and observation platforms offer moments of reflection without imposing major or invasive changes.
The harmonious coexistence of nature and activity is one of the most exciting aspects of Orchestra Park. The park doesn’t just provide usable space: it builds an ecosystem, functioning as a true social platform with calibrated balance rather than rigid hierarchies. The precision of design, sensitivity to context and the ability to enhance relationships between landscape, culture and everyday life are the real strengths of the intervention. More than a new urban image, the park creates experiences and social moments, transforming a marginal urban plot into an accessible and richly articulated one public space.
