Last week, I went to my local Dollar Tree because I’ve seen so many people posting online about the great, low-cost gardening items they find there. I was skeptical, but I was delighted with what I found!
I’ve never been much of a container gardener because I seem to find pots, baskets and accessories that are too expensive at my local garden center. Now I know I can get a great one container garden on a budget and I’m excited to try it. Time to step up my porch pot game this summer!
Checking out your local dollar store is a great way to stretch your dollar further in the garden. And they really have some really cool pieces that won’t break the bank! Keep reading to see my suggestions for inexpensive container gardening hacks.

1. Rolling Plant base for easy movement

A Rolling plant stand from Dollar Tree helps you easily move around large pots on your porch or patio without breaking your back. It is such a great solution for container gardens. One of the reasons I never patio plant pots it’s because my hose isn’t long enough to reach and carrying heavy pots isn’t on my list of things I’d like to do every day. But, with these, I could just roll the pots closer to the rubber!
No Dollar Tree near you? You can also find rolling stock from Walmart for a few dollars more. Home Depot has another great planter which doubles as a drip tank!
2. Rectangular planter for the beauty of the border

Dollar tree offers rectangular planters for under $2, which is about 10 times less than I’ve ever seen listed at a home improvement store. A rectangular planter is a great way to create borders or line your patio with flowers for a rich look. Taking inspiration from the dollar store, I found a seven-pack rectangular planters from Amazon which have removable trays and cost about $3 per planter. I think a outdoor herb garden is in my future, or maybe a fun cocktail garden for summer parties!
3. Stacking Planter Tower for vertical gardening
(Image: Crystal Bolin Photography/Getty Images)
For years, I heard about how quickly Dollar Tree stackable planters sold out! I finally found them, but was a bit disappointed. Stacked planter towers are a great way use vertical space when gardeningbut the ones from Dollar Tree are weak and brittle and not likely to last many growing seasons.
In place of the viral Dollar Tree plant tower, I’d suggest going with the Mr. Stacky stackable planters you can find on Amazon. A set of 5 stackable planters costs more than the dollar equivalent, but they are much more durable and are pre-drilled drainage holes. This stacking system will save you water in addition to space. The planters drain into each other so that any excess water from the top flows down.
Hopefully you were inspired to try some new container gardening ideas like I was. Growing a container garden doesn’t have to break the bank, and the dollar store might just be one of your best kept secrets. Pop into your local store this week and you might be surprised at what you find!
