If you want a flowery balcony now, these less common plants are much more impressive than the classic geraniums

When you think of a flowered balcony, the choice almost always falls on the same names: geraniums, petunias, surfinias. They are easy, durable and reassuring, but for this very reason they often make spaces all look the same. However, there are less common alternatives, just as simple to manage, which in this period manage to really transform the appearance of the balcony, thanks to more special colors, different shapes and a much richer visual effect.

Some varieties, despite the fact that they are rarely used, perform amazingly: they fill the vases, fall elegantly, create movement and above all give that “well-kept balcony” feeling which is difficult to achieve with the most common solutions.

At first glance it may remind you of petunias, but calibrachoa has a feature that makes it much more interesting: the density of flowers. The rims are smaller, but much more numerous, and this creates a full, almost solid effect, which immediately fills the jar.

On the balcony it works very well because it grows in a hanging manner, forming real waterfalls of color. The result is neater and at the same time more spectacular than classic solutionsespecially if you choose bold shades or color combinations.

Nemesia, subtle but stunning

Nemesia is less well known, but it has a special charm. Its flowers are small, often in soft shades, but capable of giving depth and movement to compositions. It is not an invasive plant, but for this reason it integrates perfectly even in more sophisticated or modern balconieswhere not only color is sought, but also a certain aesthetic balance. In addition, in some varieties, a light aroma is perceived, which makes the space even more pleasant to live in.

Slide, the option that works even in the sun

Often underestimated, sedum is one of the most effective warm weather plants. It withstands direct sun, needs little water and produces flowers with bright, almost bright colors. Its strong point is the visual performance in difficult conditions. Where other plants struggle, the slipper continues to bloom, creating a vibrant, spontaneous effect. It is ideal for south-facing balconies or for those who do not want constant maintenance but do not want to give up color.

Verbena, movement and lightness

Vervain is much more versatile than you might think. Drifting varieties create a light, almost spontaneous effect, which also adapts well to more modern environments. It doesn’t fill as compactly as calibrachoa, but it creates movementand this makes it ideal for more natural, less rigid compositions. Blooms are long and continuous and the colors, often between purple and pink, add character without being overwhelming.

Diascia, the detail that makes everything look more refined

Diascia is perhaps the least known of these, but also one of the most interesting. The flowers are small, in shades of pink, orange or coral, and create a very sophisticated effect. It is the plant that makes the difference in the most well-kept balconiesthose where every element is carefully selected. It’s not flashy, but it helps make the ensemble more harmonious and less obvious.

The real mistake that makes all balconies the same

It’s not so much the choice of geraniums itself, but the fact that you always rely on the same solutions without considering the end result. Many balconies are full of flowers but lack characterbecause a conscious choice is missing. Introducing even one of these less common plants immediately changes the perception of the space. The balcony looks richer, more sophisticated, less predictable.

How to get a really different result

You don’t have to fill everything with unusual plants. Just pick one or two main elements and build the rest around them. The secret is the balance between color, shape and volumenot the quantity. A well-chosen vase, a well-performing plant and a thoughtful location can do so much more than a row of identical flowers. And it’s exactly what, right now, really makes the difference between a simply flowery balcony and a balcony that really stands out.
