When you think of a flowered balcony, the choice almost always falls on the same names: geraniums, petunias, surfinias. They are easy, durable and reassuring, but for this very reason they often make spaces all look the same. However, there are less common alternatives, just as simple to manage, which in this period manage to really transform the appearance of the balcony, thanks to more special colors, different shapes and a much richer visual effect.
Some varieties, despite the fact that they are rarely used, perform amazingly: they fill the vases, fall elegantly, create movement and above all give that “well-kept balcony” feeling which is difficult to achieve with the most common solutions.

Vervain is much more versatile than you might think. Drifting varieties create a light, almost spontaneous effect, which also adapts well to more modern environments. It doesn’t fill as compactly as calibrachoa, but it creates movementand this makes it ideal for more natural, less rigid compositions. Blooms are long and continuous and the colors, often between purple and pink, add character without being overwhelming.
Diascia, the detail that makes everything look more refined
Diascia is perhaps the least known of these, but also one of the most interesting. The flowers are small, in shades of pink, orange or coral, and create a very sophisticated effect. It is the plant that makes the difference in the most well-kept balconiesthose where every element is carefully selected. It’s not flashy, but it helps make the ensemble more harmonious and less obvious.

It’s not so much the choice of geraniums itself, but the fact that you always rely on the same solutions without considering the end result.
