The toaster does something that neither the oven nor the microwave can reproduce: it heats dry, instantly and quickly on both sides at the same time. The result is a crisp exterior that the oven only achieves after twenty minutes and that the microwave never achieves.
It is a simple physical principle. The heat from the resistors acts directly on the surface of the food without having to heat the surrounding air like an oven does, and without using moisture like a microwave does. This means that the Maillard reactionwhat transforms the surface of the bread into something golden and fragrant, happens this way fast and accurate. Toasted bread is not just warm bread: it has a different structure, stiffer on the outside and softer on the inside, which holds the seasonings better and releases aromas that the perfect bread does not have.
This feature makes it useful far beyond breakfast. The problem is that almost no one gets there, because the toaster ends up in a cupboard after the first few weeks and only comes out of morning habit. It’s worth it put it back on the desktop.
Leftover pizza

It is probably the most underrated use. Pizza heated in the microwave becomes rubbery, while pizza heated in the oven takes a quarter of an hour. In the toaster it only takes two minutes and the the base becomes crispy as if freshly baked. The problem of seasoning dripping is easily solved: fold the slice over it before placing it, like a calzone. The filling stays inside and the toaster is clean.
Packaged waffles
The ones found in the supermarket are almost always very soft and laced up. The toaster completely transforms them: the the surface becomes crispy, the edges caramelize slightly. With a spoonful of hazelnut cream or honey, they become a breakfast that has nothing to envy from that of the bar.
Thinly sliced vegetables
Zucchini, eggplant, peppers cut into long, thin slices less than one centimeter fit in the toaster and they come out cooked in three minutes. It doesn’t replace a real grill, but for a quick meal during the week it’s a solution that few consider. The only caution is dry the vegetables thoroughly before adding themso as not to release water inside them.
Leftover desserts
Brioche, croissants, donut slices from the day before: the toaster restores them to almost their original state. Dry heat Restores crispness to the outside without drying out the insidewhich remains soft. It’s much more efficient than the microwave, which tends to make everything rubbery after a few seconds.
The wraps and sandwiches
A piadina placed in the toaster for thirty seconds completely changes its consistency. The same goes for hamburger buns split in half: the the inner surface becomes slightly toasted and it holds up to seasoning much better without getting soggy. It’s a small detail that improves the result out of proportion to the effort.
The toaster is one of the cheapest kitchen appliances and one of the most overlooked after the first few months. It’s worth rediscovering.
