Salte Library book by Niiiz Design Lab
Located in Bukchon, SeoulSalte Library Bukchon by Niiiz Design Lab explores how fragrance, literature and interior architecture can be combined into a single spatial experience. Developed for Korean fragrance brand Solte Library, the project translates scent and written storytelling into retail environment organized around atmosphere, sequence and sensory interaction.
The project emerges amid the broader expansion of South Korea’s cultural industries, where fragrance brands are increasingly placing narrative and identity as central elements of product design. Rather than presenting perfume as an isolated commodity, Solte Library connects each perfume to literary narratives developed in collaboration with Korean authors. Text and fragrance are combined from the earliest stages of the brand’s creative process, allowing the written word to shape the perception of fragrance throughout the space.
Niiiz Design Lab organized the interior around the concept of ‘NOTE’, referring both to the multi-layered structure of fragrance composition and to the act of writing. This dual meaning informs the store’s spatial sequence, where visitors move through a series of five interconnected zones that gradually unfold like chapters within a narrative.
Externally, the building maintains a restrained architectural expression that contrasts with the immersive interior environment. A large front-facing window overlooks the main hall and reveals the central work sculptural installationcreating a visual connection between the interior and the surrounding urban fabric of Bukchon.

The exterior maintains a restrained and minimal expression, designed to increase visitors’ curiosity
Inside, visitors encounter an installation that references both salt and books, material metaphors used to express the diffusion of smell and language. A tunnel-like corridor directs traffic towards the main hall, while creating a transitional spatial condition between the external and internal environments. Along one side of the passage, handwritten impressions from guest authors accompany the fragrances, while the opposite side allows guests to leave their own written thoughts on memos that double as fragrance blotters. Through this interplay, scent and writing become intertwined forms of memory and personal documentation.
The main display area is organized around a transparent circular fitting inspired by the shape of an open book. About fifty perfume-related products are placed around the structure, encouraging visitors to move around the space while comparing scents and reading the accompanying literary descriptions.
Additional spaces include a dedicated service and payment counter designed to accommodate international visitors, alongside a curated reading zone where books extend the fragrance experience beyond the conventional retail display.
Through spatial sequencing, material limitation, literary references and sensory interaction, Salte Library Bukchon, developed by Niiiz Design Lab Studio, positions perfume retail as an immersive architectural environment connected to narrative, memory, and contemporary Korean cultural production.
