Interior Design Studio Johnson Ribolla took on the task of transforming an underused warehouse into a welcoming and happy space for new residents of Reading’s Thames Quarter.
Once construction of the complex was completed and residents began to move in, it became apparent that there was a greater volume of children than originally anticipated, with calls for a personalized space to allow the youngest to meet and play together safely.
Giacomo Ribolla, director of Johnson Ribolla, says: “A key challenge of the Kids Quarter fit-out was how we could create several different zones within the single space, including a play area, cinema and arts and crafts area.”
Johnson Ribolla specified Forbo’s Marmoleum throughout the play and craft areas, in various green tones from the Real, Fresco and Walton ranges. Ribolla explains: “Since we expected the area to be heavily used, we needed a floor with a finish that was easy to clean and maintain. From a design perspective, given the lack of natural light, we also relied on the floor to bring some much-needed brightness and color into the space. “His carbon credentials were another asset.
Created from up to 98% natural raw materials and free of PVC and phthalate, we were sure it would contribute to the health and well-being of residents.’
The cinema has a range of seating options, including beanbags. Understandably, the brief was different for this zone, as Ribolla explains: “For the floor, we needed something soft and comfortable, like a rug, but still durable and clean. Flotex by Forbo offers a textile feel while being incredibly durable.
“We chose a fairly funky geometric pattern from Forbo’s ‘created by Galeote’ collection, in keeping with the wider aesthetic of the design. www.forbo-flooring.co.uk
