DSCENE Beauty present document Touch Tint Trace as part of it DSCENE magazine Design under pressure issue, featuring a beauty cover with a model Jane Furepresented by Xdirectn Agency. Created by a visual artist Yushen Leeknown as Mossand makeup artist Kyra Luithe work brings historical objects into a contemporary visual language, using the human face as a surface for form, color, intimacy and interpretation.
Design Under Pressure examines the forces shaping creative work across fashion, beauty, design, architecture, art, film, music and public life. The theme examines pressure as a creative condition, tracing how artists respond to expectations, visibility, discipline and control. With Touch Tint Trace, DSCENE Beauty approaches the subject through a different kind of pressure, the pressure of history conveyed by small objects, the pressure of cultural memory and the act of translating ornament into a living image.
The project draws from Fuyun Xuan Collection at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, where Kyra Lui first encountered the detail and intensity hidden within these small objects. Once used in late imperial China to store tobacco for medicinal purposes, snuff bottles later became highly decorative objects, prized for their carvings, painted patterns, color and proportion. Through makeup and photography, their story returns to the body, where their original function once created a direct sense of contact.
Throughout the series, Jane Fu and the models appear as extensions of the bottles, with the makeup translating caps, vessels, surfaces and accents to the face. The eyes take on the color of the bottle caps, the lips echo the body of the vase and the hair beside Fabien Pico adds texture all over and around the face. The images go beyond reproduction, addressing beauty as a way of reading history through the skin.
As part of Design Under Pressure, the DSCENE Beauty cover looks at heritage through control, art and transformation.
