PILLS allows the cloud-like structure to drift over China

PILLS transforms a floating cloud into a symbolic portal

The Chinese design studio PILLS realizes a monumental floating cloud facility, standing at the entrance of Dongguan’s MIXC VILLAGE development in Binhai Bay New Area. Commissioned by China Resources Land as part of the wider atmospheric design strategy of the outlet project, the intervention acts as a gateway landmark, environmental device and narrative medium. Suspended from three to 20 meters above the ground throughout the day, the membrane structure appears to breathe, rising and falling above the resort-like retail complex, introducing visitors to what the designers describe as “journey to fantasy island”.

Designed as the symbolic entry point to MIXC VILLAGE’s retail vision, the installation translates the project’s philosophy “free comfortably” in form. The development’s white architectural complex, positioned along the coastline between the city and the sea, looks like an island floating on the horizon of the greater Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay area. PILLS responds with a cloud-like object hovering over the main entrance, visible from the surrounding freeways during the day and night.

The narrative design shapes a fantasy island experience

For PILLS, the project begins with a question about contemporary consumer culture and the growing demand for emotionally driven experiences. THE Chinese designers develop a narrative that imagines the location as a mysterious, uncharted island. Visitors metaphorically follow a cloud drifting towards the destination, arriving at a place where moments of rest, exploration and concentration reconnect them with everyday life. The main narrative unfolds through a sequence of spatial chapters titled Apocalypse, Landing, Encounters, and Gathering, each connected via atmospheric facilities scattered throughout the location.

The portal cloud becomes the visual seal of this narrative invitation. Acting simultaneously as a shade structure, microclimate device and orientation marker, it creates a gentler threshold to growth. Through fog systems and dynamic movement, the intervention dissolves the boundaries between architecture, environment and scenography, encouraging visitors to stay under it rather than just pass it.

Air membrane technology gives the cloud a breathing rate

To create the hovering form, the team extracted the soft geometry of clouds and merged eight spherical surfaces into a continuous ring-shaped membrane volume. Developed through 3D modeling and informed by the construction logic of inflatable air structures, the installation continuously monitors internal air pressure and adjusts the ratio between helium and air in response to changing temperatures.

This system allows the structure to inflate and deflate repeatedly at the rate of breathing. Coordinated lifters allow the cloud to rise and fall slowly at different times, creating the impression of a living object hovering over the square. A wind monitoring mechanism monitors environmental conditions and automatically lowers the installation whenever wind speeds exceed safe operating limits.

Timed fog systems enhance the atmospheric effect at ground level, surrounding the square with steam. At night, the installation changes character through animated lighting that transforms the pristine white film into a cinematic surface where waves, sunsets, rosy skies and star fields ripple across the structure.
