There is something truly magical about finding a tiny masterpiece hidden inside a rough piece of rock. Sculptor Matthew Simmonds it does just that, unearthing incredibly detailed Gothic marble sculptures through chunks of raw Carrara marble and limestone. It’s like stumbling upon a secret world that’s been waiting to be discovered for centuries.
What makes his work so impressive is the “clash” of textures. One side of the piece may be a jagged, uneven boulder, while the interior reveals hand-carved Doric columns, perfect arches and precise architectural details. This contrast makes the spaces feel like ancient ruins or rediscovered holy places hidden away from the modern world.
Simmonds doesn’t just guess where to come off. He is a former architectural stonemason with a lifelong obsession with rock. You can see this expertise in 2025’s standout piece, Gothic Passage with Sedilia. It’s a beautiful study in balance—using the heavy, solid nature of stone to create a sense of airy, sacred space. He treats these stone cathedrals with a level of reverence that makes the heavy material feel light, almost ethereal.
“This sculpture explores… a balance of symmetry and asymmetry,” explains Simmonds. “A passage moves through the stone between two repeating worlds.”
It’s a poetic reminder that perfection often lives right in the imperfect. By leaving the outer edges of the stone rough, Simmonds celebrates the raw beauty of nature alongside the disciplined beauty of human artistry.
