CENTRAL and Maxime Delvaux transform Logroño’s square
In the Market Square, Logroño, Spainright in front of the Co-Cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda, CENTRAL and photographer Maxime Delvaux present Architecture for Ritual, one of the temporary facilities created specifically for Concentric Festival 2026.
A large sand dune and a colorful wooden mast compose the project, which introduces a temporary beach-like landscape in the center of the city, encouraging residents and visitors to engage and interact with the square in unexpected ways. Developed through the duo’s research into the architecture of Logroño, the installation is enclosed by a low perimeter wall that evokes the traces of Logroño’s former fortifications, introducing an informal place to sit and gather.
During the festival, which will run until June 23, 2026, the sandy intervention becomes an active social landscape. Children climb the dune and play on its surface, while visitors stop to take photos in front of the brightly colored mast. Others occupy the perimeter benches, turning the installation into a daily meeting point. Placed on the stone facade of the cathedral, the work introduces an unexpected burst of color and material contrast to the historic square.

Architecture for Ritual activates public life in the Plaza del Mercado
A tall mast assembled from wooden planks painted in the colors of Logroño stands at the center of the installation from Practice based in Brussels CENTRAL and architectural photographer Maxim Delvaux. Visitors can insert handwritten notes containing wishes, intentions and reflections into openings within the web, allowing the project to accumulate traces of collective participation throughout the week.
Architecture for Ritual culminates on June 23, the last day of Concéntrico 2026 and the eve of Saint John’s Day, when the installation becomes part of a community celebration. A large carpet of sand protects the cobblestones of the square while the web takes on a ceremonial role, acting as a base for a communal fire. Messages collected throughout the week are burned as part of the event, linking the temporary installation to a long-standing local tradition.
CENTRAL and Maxime Delvaux explore how architecture can support collective rituals and daily encounters, introducing a temporary beach in the heart of Logroño and encouraging intergenerational participation. Architecture for Ritual shows how an ephemeral and simple intervention can change the atmosphere and use of public space, activating the historic square through shared experiences.
