QSTN?MRK Turns One Dollar Bills into Participatory Art
Last Dollar is a collaborative, live work of art which takes the form of a growing pile of US one dollar bills. Created by art collective QSTN?MRK, an internet controlled ATM dispenses each bill on demand and whoever drops the last one becomes “The Last Dollar”. The whole process is broadcast live on the project’s website.
Inspired by by Andy Warhol A 1975 statement that “making money is an art,” The Last Dollar uses money itself as a medium. The work consists of a stack of US dollar bills placed on the floor, gradually changing shape as new bills are added. The project was launched on June 25, 2026, with an initial contribution of 100 one-dollar bills from QSTN?MRK. Since then, the sculpture it has been built entirely through public participation.
Each participant adds cash to the pile and becomes a co-author of the artwork. As the bills fall, they change the shape of the sculpture in unpredictable ways. The entrant’s name appears on the live stream and until another contribution is made, they hold the title of “Last Dollar.” Every contribution is time-stamped, every account remains a part of it installationand each participant is recorded in the project schedule. Contributors also receive a digital Author Certificate documenting their participation.

Last dollar digital artwork evolves through every contribution
The sculpture works through a custom ATM that dispenses one-dollar bills on the floor. Participants can contribute the equivalent of $1, $10, $20, $50 or $100, with the machine releasing the corresponding number of individual bills. A single dollar is enough to become “The Last Dollar”, while larger contributions free up multiple accounts at once, reshaping the stack through their accumulation.
A recurring figure known as the janitor periodically enters the facility to sweep, fold the bills by hand, reshuffle the stack, and refill the ATM. These maintenance actions are part of the continuous operation of the works.
THE digital installationwas arrested by collective art QSTN?MRK, continues to exist only through continued participation, making its duration open-ended. Whether it will remain active for days or years depends entirely on future contributions, positioning the evolving pile as an ever-changing collective work of art.
