The organic wearable turns rhythm into tactile feedback

What if music could be felt instead of heard? Designer Haji Yang explores this possibility with Live Beats, an artistic wearable that rethinks the way people experience sound in noisy environments. Instead of relying solely on audio, the headset The concept turns the beat into synchronized haptic feedback using four flexible tentacles that rest against the wearer’s cheeks, allowing the music to continue through touch when surrounding noise overwhelms the ears.

Live Beats departs from conventional noise-canceling headphones, which isolate users from their surroundings to preserve sound quality. Instead, the concept embraces ambient sound, constantly monitoring ambient noise via a built-in sensor. Once the ambient volume reaches a certain threshold, the headphones activate a haptic system that converts elements of the playing track into rhythmic slaps to the face. Instead of reproducing every musical detail, the system focuses on percussion and tempo — aspects of the music that remain recognizable through the skin. A companion app analyzes each song, assigning bass, percussion and melodic levels to different haptic movement patterns.

The look of the wearable is as unconventional as its interaction model. Instead of exposing the speakers, drivers or hardware, Live Beats adopts an organic form inspired by conch shells and octopus tentacles. A translucent outer shell reveals a red spiral frame that runs through each flexible arm, referencing both biological structures and mechanical systems. The result blurs the lines between wearable technology and the living organism, creating a device that appears to grow around the ear rather than clinging to it.

Each haptic arm is finished with interchangeable contact tips that allow users to customize the physical feel. The soft sponge components provide a softer interaction, while the metal tips provide cooler, more stable impacts that change the perceived character of different musical genres. Rather than treating haptics as a simple notification feature, the concept positions touch as another expressive level of listening.

The concept imagines alternatives to sound-based interfaces

Although Live Beats remains a design concept, its core concept extends beyond music. A wearable that can communicate through touch could potentially provide navigation cues, notifications, accessibility features, or environmental alerts without relying on visual or auditory feedback. By transferring information from the ears to the skin, the project imagines alternative ways for wearable devices to interact with users in increasingly noisy public environments.
