The finger test says all is well. Push in the top inch of soil and it comes back cool, moist, maybe a little sticky. However, the plant above it leans over by afternoon, the leaf tips get crisp at the margins, and the obvious conclusion – that it needs a drink – leads to more water, which somehow makes it worse.
Wet soil and a thirsty plant are not a contradiction. Watering the garden well means that moisture is getting into the roots, and there are several ways that soil can be broken down, even when the soil around them holds plenty. Damaged roots cannot pull it in. Compacted or water-repellent fertilizer lets it slide back. On a brutal afternoon, leaves can lose water faster than any root system could replenish.
3 signs that a plant is thirsty in wet soil
Three signals tend to appear when a plant is dehydrated in wet soil. Either one on its own can mean something else, though together they make a pretty clear case.
1. Wilt that does not recover overnight

Wilting in the hot part of the day is quite normal, and a plant that gets stronger by evening is simply riding out the heat. The problem is that it is still leaning the next morning, before the sun does anything to it. Night is when a healthy plant catches up, replenishes its tissue while transpiration slows to almost nothing. When it doesn’t, the roots don’t perform and the moisture of the soil around them has nothing to do with it.
2. Crisp Leaf Margins on New Growth

Brown, papery edges creeping around the margins of the leaves, esp newer developmentwhile the soil sits moist. These margins are the last stop in the plant’s plumbing, so when water becomes scarce within the plant, it is the first tissue to be sacrificed. Yellowing of entire leaves it usually points to somewhere else – overwatering or a nutrient problem. It’s the dry lip on an otherwise green leaf that indicates the water just isn’t getting enough.
3. Water running straight or beads on top

Pour water and see what happens. It either disappears in seconds, or sits stuck to the surface and rolls off the side. Opposite behavior, same underlying problem. Compost that has completely dried out can be turned hydrophobic on you, the surface becomes waxy enough that the moisture simply repels it. Put it in a container and the water does something less obvious – it slides into the gap between the shrunken root ball and the pot wall, runs out the drain hole, and you never see it touch a root. The ground looks wet, but the root ball inside it is bone dry.

Roots are the common thread. Anything that damages them – rot from a pot that remains saturated, poor transplanting, insects working underground – leaves the plant with less ability to draw water, even when it’s sitting in it. Root rot is the irony, as it comes from too much water and causes symptoms exactly like too little.
Heat does something different. After the mid-90s Fahrenheit (35 C), transpiration through the leaves can exceed what the roots can provide, no matter how healthy they are, and the plant wilts as an inhibitor while the soil remains moist. Soil compaction it plays its part, pinching off the air pockets that the roots need to function. How to fix it
Water repellent soil needs rewettingno more water. For a container, put the whole pot in a basin of water and leave it for half an hour or so, until the surface darkens and the bubbling stops – this is the root that puts it back. In beds, the same principle applies more slowly: several light passes through fifteen minutes apart, allowing each to soften the surface for the next. Root problems are less forgiving. Take out a struggling potted plant and look – healthy roots are pale and firm, while rotten roots these become brown, soft and smell sour. Cut off what’s dead, transfer back to fresh mix and cut back some of the top growth so there’s less foliage to support the reduced root system. For plants under heat stress with the roots being good, the answer is not in the roots at all. Shade until afternoon does more than any amount of watering.

A few habits make the whole problem less likely. THE best time for water it’s early, while the soil is cool and whatever comes down has time to move into the root zone before the day pulls it back. Check before watering, not on a schedule, and check deeper than a finger can reach. Two inches (5cm) down tells you more than the surface ever does.
