Architect announced the winners of its 14th annual A+Awards on 8 June 2026 – the largest and most international architecture awards program takes place, with more than 200 firms from more than 80 countries being recognized this year. The program was based on a specific premise: the democratization of architecture, without limiting it to a small circle of celebrity firms or prestigious categories.
It runs more than 100 categories and levels in a public vote alongside the jury process, so the “popular choice” winner and the “jury winner” are often two different projects in the same category. The jury is deliberately not only made up of architects, but also figures from art, technology, fashion or the media. The idea is that a building’s cultural and public impact should be judged by more than just other professionals.

The common thread
Several jury converged on the same observation: the field is moving away from seeing architecture as a spectacle (the spectacular, photogenic building) toward something quieter and more down-to-earth, material and art. This year’s strongest works are the most site-specific, compositions that feel embedded in a context rather than imposed on it.
Adaptive reuse, low-carbon building systems, climate adaptation and traditional materials are just some of the topics that were once niche and are now becoming mainstream, moving from experimental to mainstream and defining future ways of thinking about architecture. AquaPraça by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Höweler + Yoon


AquaPraça is a floating cultural square designed jointly by Carlo Ratti‘s Studio and the Boston company Höweler + Yoon. It debuted at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, curated entirely by Ratti, before making a transatlantic journey to Belém, Brazil, for Italy’s pavilion at COP30.
The design uses buoyancy physics combined with sensing technology to adjust to changing water levels and crowd size, aiming to bring visitors eye-level with the rising water rather than shielding them from it.
Limberlost Place by Moriyama Teshima Architects with Acton Ostry Architects


Limberlost Place by Moriyama Teshima Architects with Acton Ostry Architects is a 10-story, zero-use, exposed-timber academic building in Toronto on the waterfront campus of George Brown College, and by most accounts, the largest residential-style exposed-timber constructed anywhere. This is relevant because the Ontario building code limited mass timber structures to 6 stories prior to this project, and the design team worked directly with the city and code officials to push the regulatory ceiling.
According to the company, the massive timber structure reduced embodied carbon by around 30% compared to a concrete building. The structural system combines strips of cobbled timber crossings with columns in a beam-free arrangement that allows for column-free openings and two solar chimneys to provide passive ventilation.
Biribinhas House by Studio MK27


Biribinhas House by Studio MK27 replaced an existing residence on the same footprint in Guarujá, Brazil, dividing the previous structure into a transparent, open ground floor for living space and an upper volume, clad in mashrabiya-style wooden screens. The roof takes its name and form from the biribinha, a canopy of slender branches derived from traditional Brazilian building, which filters light into a shifting shadow pattern rather than blocking it out completely.
The screens also regulate airflow and temperature during the day and can be left open to ventilate the upper floor. It is an excellent example of using traditional materials not only for decoration or nostalgia, but also for real and effective functions.
