Color is a powerful thing. Emotive and expansive, the most exciting hues can’t help but define our homes, clothes and objects, bathing every aspect of our existence in their brilliance and personality. Extending their influence into the brick and mortar world for the first time, Gantri is proud to present The Storea space to welcome community and commerce, but most importantly, color.
A 1920s auto shop in the heart of the Mission District is the setting and backdrop for the new creative hub. Divided into thirds, the front aspect of The Shop serves as an exhibition space and community space, with color cards, rest areas and a unique method of separating rooms with Gantri lacquered in the signature green. Tiles sit balanced on top of each other, perpendicular to their neighbors below. This creates an almost scale-like appearance, with undulating tones of green that gather light in slightly different amounts, creating a serpentine feel when viewed from a distance.
The center of the store acts as a flexible hub, which can be used for whatever is most pressing at the time. This gives the team space to host events, meetings or kick-off sessions while maintaining the polish of a showroom.
In the third quadrant, the team works the magic that has brought international recognition––and more than a few copies––for ten years in the business. Functionally the engine room of the operation, materials research, prototyping and refinement all happen here under one roof. The streamlining of a process that was once so technically laborious and required a large amount of background knowledge is quite elegant, even more so when combined with the clean design that Gantri is known for.
An exhibition space, community hub, design studio and materials laboratory all in one, the space is both a stunning achievement of how ubiquitous the Gantri model has become and inspires a strong future in the coming decades. They take being part of their neighborhood seriously and plan to call 10th Street home for the near and far future.
