Adidas reveal it Supernova Rise 3 Adaptiveits first performance running shoe created in collaboration with adaptive athletes and people with disabilities. The launch marks a new step for adidas Running, with a focus on access to sport through design that meets a wider range of needs.

The Supernova Rise 3 Adaptive is based on the Supernova franchise and introduces changes that improve comfort and usability. It features Dreamstrike+ foam, a reshaped midsole that offers a softer feel than the version used in the Supernova Rise 2. The LIGHTTRAXION outsole provides traction suitable for running conditions and supports performance on all surfaces.
The shoe features an easy heel designed for hands-free entry and for runners who rely on step-down techniques. A low-pressure lacing system reduces contact in sensitive areas of the foot. Tactile details, including a chevron pattern on the heel, support athletes with visual or sensory needs. Heel and tongue loops include magnetic toggle to aid in entry, hold and adjustment. The forefoot fit provides more room and volume, allowing the toes to spread more naturally.
adidas worked with GAMUT Management on focus groups and product testing. Participants included people with Down syndrome, wheelchair users, people living with chronic illnesses and people with motor or fine motor challenges. Paralympians Tracy Otto and Haven Shepherd took part in the proceedings. The Supernova Rise 3 Adaptive received the GAMUT Seal of Approval™ after this test.
Chris Nikic played a key role in shaping the shoe. As the first person with Down syndrome to complete an Ironman triathlon, he worked with adidas on several prototypes. He experienced pain and blisters when he ran in shoes that did not fit his foot anatomy. Testing different versions helped refine the final design. Nikos has since trained on the updated model and completed three Ironmans, four half Ironmans and 20 marathons.
Paralympian Tracy Otto described her experience working with adidas as focusing on making a shoe that supports independence and ease of use. Her input, along with feedback from other participants, informed the final design.
The Supernova Rise 3 Adaptive was released globally on March 21, celebrating World Down Syndrome Day. It is available through adidas.com, the adidas app and select retailers.
The model features a stack height of 37mm in the heel and 29mm in the forefoot, with an 8mm drop. It weighs 290 grams for men and 246 grams for women, with a retail price of $140 or €150.
