Monologue Café: A colossal sculpture in the landscape
Korean Studio SOSOKKI ANAC travels to a wooded landscape in Gangwon-do to design this Monologue Café as a series of angular brick volumes. The monolithic structure rises from the ground in sharp, purposeful formations. The building reads as one continuous mass, its surfaces folded and tilted, with each plane catching light differently during the day.
Located along a quiet water’s edge and low vegetation, the project avoids a single, fixed point of view. As visitors move around it, the cafe offsets in profile, sometimes appearing solid and vertical, elsewhere stretched and low to the ground. The red one brick The facade gives the structure a consistent material presence, while the geometry introduces variation through depth, shadow and projection.

SOSOKKI ANAC refers to a fortress
SOSOKKI ANAC, n architects behind the Monologue Café, start the project with a speculative idea: a monastery imagined from a time before the world reset. This narrative is translated into the architecture through the use of layered, multifaceted forms that suggest accumulation rather than synthesis. Each volume feels placed in relation to another to create a sense of density and continuity throughout the site.
References to a monumental boundary condition inform the massiveness of the work, with thick walls and sharp angles reinforcing the sense of separation and threshold. These gestures are expressed through plinth levels that sculpturally tilt, fold and intersect, thus creating moments where the building reads as solid and cut.

Interiors shaped by light and intersection
The interiors shift into an atmosphere of pale surfaces and filtered light. Sloped walls and narrow sections guide movement through the space, creating a sequence of compressed and expanded areas. Seating is arranged along elongated aisles, where tables line up with corner windows that frame views of the trees and ground cover.
Large triangular openings define key moments inside the cafe. These openings bring in daylight precisely, casting changing patterns on the interior surfaces. The geometry of the openings echoes the exterior form, establishing continuity between interior and exterior while drawing attention to the surrounding landscape.
