PUMA unveiled a new collection with the Beaverone of his most iconic sneakers, crafted with premium materials from a British tannery Charles F. Stead. The release keeps the familiar silhouette intact while introducing a different surface and finish through the use of English suede.
SNEAKERS
The palette features pastel shades, from lavender and soft blue to blush pink, butter yellow, soft orange and light grey. Each pair takes a tonal approach, with the upper, laces and Formstrip in the same color. This draws attention to the suede itself and keeps the design consistent throughout the collection. A co-branded suede hangtag completes each pair, referencing the hardware behind the collaboration.
Founded in 1825, Charles F. Stead built its reputation through a tanning process that produces suede with a soft feel and a firm finish. Shoemakers and designers have used its materials for decades, making it a recognized name in English suede production. His involvement here brings a different level of material quality to the Suede.
Suede has a long history at PUMA. The design dates back to 1968, when the original version, known as the Crack, appeared at the Olympics in Mexico City and gained attention during Tommie Smith’s medal ceremony. In 1973, Walt Frazier introduced his version, known as the Clyde, bringing the silhouette to the basketball court.
The shoe later took the name Suede, referring to its upper, and entered new cultural spaces. B-boy crews and early hip-hop communities adopted it as part of their style, while skateboarders relied on its durability and grip. When it arrived in the UK during the 1980s, it appeared under the name States, reflecting its presence beyond the United States.
This release builds on that story through material and color. The pastel palette introduces a softer direction, while the use of Charles F. Stead suede enhances the execution without changing the structure. The result keeps Suede’s identity intact while presenting it through a different surface and finish.
