Voice translation in a vertical light and sound system

Axis Mundi: Resonant Spire is 12 meters interactive tower developed by Sergei Konchekov for 2026 Burning Man Honoraria Program. The project translates the human voice into a vertical system light and soundfacing conditions of digital communication in which expression is stable but rarely converges on a common meaning.

Developed as part of ongoing research at Columbia GSAPP, the structure responds to the fragmentation of modern signal environments. In urban and digital environments, voice input is often filtered, normalized and distributed without synthesis. Axis Mundi: Resonant Spire reframes this situation in a spatial context.

Located on Black Rock Desert playa in Nevadathe tower receives voice, noise and presence data through a distributed network of microphones and sensors. These inputs are processed in real time and mapped to approximately 300 circular modules arranged vertically along the structure. The system does not isolate individual signals. Instead, it places them in interaction, where overlapping frequencies and amplitudes operate in a common field.

The collective input shapes the light into a vertical spatial system

Light output is produced through this interaction process. As participation increases, signal density shifts and partial alignments appear, producing a more continuous vertical illumination. When coherence is achieved, the structure is read as a unified column of light. When alignment is absent, the system remains scattered and unstable.

The 300 rings act as a vertical interaction file. Each section records states of collective activity over time, creating a gradient in which lower sections maintain stable conditions while upper sections remain responsive. The light remains within the structure as accumulated information rather than as a transient output.

Axis Mundi: Resonant Spire project by designer Sergei Konchekov develops through COLLIZIUM, a methodology that frames architectural form through computational processes based on collisions and social inputs. In this system, the structure does not operate independently of the participants. produced through their presence. Architectural form emerges only through collective engagement, where individual signals are organized into temporary states of synchronization.
