When putting up curtains, you almost always follow the window. The stick is fixed directly above the frame and the width more or less coincides with that of the frame. It’s an automatic choice, but it’s also the reason many rooms remain visually low and understated.
The trick that really changes everything is simple, but little used: the curtains should not follow the window, but the wall.
Bringing the curtains up to the ceiling changes the perception
When the stick is fixed a few centimeters above the window, the eye clearly reads where the frame ends and the wall begins. This “cut” visually lowers the room. If, however, the stick rises high, almost level with the ceiling, something very specific happens.

In a room with a ceiling of 270 cm, for example, placing the curtains 10–15 cm from the ceiling instead of above the window can make the room appear much taller, even without changing the rest of the furniture.

The other common mistake is stopping at the width of the window. By doing this, when the curtains are open, they still cover part of the glass and less light enters. But when the rod is wider, even 20-30 cm per side, the curtains are gathered completely outside the window. The window remains free and appears wider.
In a living room with a typical window, this detail makes a huge difference. Light enters more fully and the wall appears larger. Even a regular window gains presence.
The floor matters: length is not a detail
Short curtains are one of the most obvious mistakes. Standing on the ledge or halfway up the wall breaks the verticality and ruins all the work done above. To get the right effect, the curtains should reach all the way to the floor. Even better if they barely touch the floor or rest slightly, creating a continuous line.
In a bedroom, for example, a floor-length curtain makes everything softer and more complete. A short curtain, although beautiful, makes the window look smaller and the room less tidy.
The right fabric changes the atmosphere
Not all fabrics work the same. Curtains that are too stiff or heavy can weigh down the wall, especially in small rooms. Light fabrics such as linen or cotton blend work best with this type of installation. They descend naturally, follow the vertical line and let the light filter through.
In a modern living room, a light, slightly sheer curtain, hung high and wide, creates a much more elegant effect than a heavy curtain hung on the window.
The color should be consistent with the wall
The color of the curtains has as much impact as their position. If the contrast with the wall is too strong, the curtain detaches and interrupts the continuity. The most effective solutions are tone-on-tone or slightly lighter or darker than the wall. This way the curtain is incorporated and the wall looks more uniform.
In a room with beige or beige walls, for example, a curtain in a similar shade creates a much more sophisticated effect than a completely different one.
Where is this effect most commonly seen?
In a small living room, this trick immediately changes the perception of the space. The window looks bigger, the ceiling higher and the room brighter. In the bedroom, however, the effect is more about atmosphere. Tall, long curtains create a softer, more “full”, almost hotel-like feel.
Even in rooms with imperfect windows, perhaps a little small or poorly placed, this system helps balance everything out. It doesn’t change the window, but it changes how it’s perceived.
Errors that invalidate the result
Setting the stick too low remains the main mistake. Even a few centimeters make a difference. Using curtains that are too tight is another common problem. When there is not enough fabric, the curtain does not hang well and loses all its visual function. Choosing fabrics that are too heavy in small spaces can also create the opposite effect, making the room feel more closed in than stylish. Finally, ignore the window to wall ratio. Curtains should communicate with the entire surface, not just the frame.
The final result
When the curtains are placed in this way, the room changes without the need for any other intervention. The proportions look different, the light comes in better and the environment looks more refined. It’s not about style, it’s about position. And such a simple choice, if done right, has a much bigger impact than you might think.
