CNC-machined timber units shape SAGA’s summer cottage in Denmark


Space habitat thinking lands in Zealand

On a wooded plot in Zeeland, Denmarka wide oak shingle roof falls around a 35 square meter cottage built for six people. SAGA Space Architects he calls it EcoNeo, a compact timber retreat with two sleeping mezzanines hidden above its communal interior and a sauna on the ground floor. The scale is closer to studio apartmentbut the silhouette echoes a traditional cabinwith deep eaves and large windows. Meanwhile, a terrace extends into the surrounding garden.

Earlier this year, designboom looked at SAGA’s lunar and underwater habitats, where the confined space shapes every surface and system. EcoNeo brings this experience back to Earth. Technology remains mostly behind the timbers, while the exterior speaks in familiar Danish cottage terms through the steep roof and slats. Large openings draw trees and shift daylight into rooms.

six people within 35 square meters

Opposite the ground floor of EcoNeo, the group at SAGA Space Architects organizes the kitchen and bathroom around a central living room that can accommodate up to ten people. Built-in storage covers the edges to leave the middle open, while two mezzanines above are the main sleeping areas for a family of four. The wide view through the house keeps the compact design visually connected, and the changes in height give each zone its own atmosphere without closing it off.

Large windows extend the interior towards the garden, while a mechanical skylight sends daylight into the center of the floor plan. The porch adds another room when the weather is warm, which can be accessed directly from the main area. Nearby, the indoor sauna combines with a cold plunge outside, bringing an intimate Nordic ritual to a home shaped through space-habitat research.

Oak shingles wrap around the exterior and continue across the roof, giving the solid volume a single textured surface that will change tone as it weathers. Inside, plywood and Douglas fir form much of the visible shell. Birch and OSB appear through built-ins, while wood fiber insulation sits within the walls. The palette keeps rooms warm and tactile, even as the construction process begins with code and mechanical cutting.

SAGA developed the EcoNeo as a fully parametric digital model before sending its parts to a CNC mill. The structure is broken into small labeled units that can be handled with limited lifting equipment and assembled in sequence. Once joined, the pieces act as a structural body. This construction logic gives the studio tight control over every cut and joint, while reducing cut-outs and time spent on on-site adjustments.

a tiny house built like a habitat

Inside the wooden shell, circadian lighting follows a 24-hour rhythm developed through SAGA’s work with confined environments. A custom sensor network monitors air quality and movement. Connected to a central operating system, the home can open windows and move blinds while managing the sauna as indoor conditions change.

SAGA estimates that the compact footprint and biogenic construction reduce annual carbon emissions by around 80 percent compared to an average newly built Danish holiday home. Much of this reduction starts with the floor area itself: 35 square meters compared to the average of 109.1 square meters reported by the studio for Danish cottages built between 2010 and 2020.
