Simmons has spent more than 150 years studying one of the most overlooked aspects of everyday life: the way we sleep. While mattresses are often thought of as simple household products, a visit to the company’s manufacturing facilities in Italy reveals a far more complex reality – one where ergonomics, materials science, industrial engineering and craftsmanship converge to shape an experience that affects almost a third of our lives.

We spend almost eight hours a day sleeping, yet few of us devote as much attention to choosing a mattress as we do to choosing a chair, sofa or even a lamp. We compare finishes, materials, and aesthetics when furnishing our homes, while the item that props up our bodies each night is often purchased after a few minutes of trying it on in a showroom—or worse, after comparing prices online. Seeing how Simmons designs and builds his sleep systems gave us the opportunity to rethink that perspective, revealing that mattress design is less about softness or luxury than mechanical recovery.

For decades, design has focused on shaping the spaces where we live, work and interact. More recently, however, the discussion has expanded beyond aesthetics to include well-being, from circadian lighting and indoor air quality to acoustic comfort and biophilic environments. A mattress is no longer just another piece of furniture, but a sophisticated interface between the body and the built environment, quietly influencing how we recover, recharge and prepare for the day ahead. As designers increasingly embrace human-centered approaches, sleep systems deserve consideration alongside the many products already recognized for their impact on everyday life prosperity.

Inside Simmons: engineering meets craftsmanship

Walking through the Simmons Manufacturing facilities quickly reveal that designing a mattress is much more complicated than most people realize. Each product is the result of a carefully orchestrated system in which dozens of components work together to achieve a precise ergonomic goal. Pocket springs with different characteristics, breathable fabrics, comfort layers, natural and technical fillings, support structures and optional toppers are combined according to specific performance requirements rather than simple concepts of softness or firmness.

At the same time, advanced manufacturing technologies coexist with manual manufacturing craftsmanshipespecially in the company’s premium collections, where skilled craftsmen still perform tasks that machines cannot easily reproduce. The result is a manufacturing process where industrial precision and human expertise complement each other rather than compete. The invisible architecture of comfort

One of the most interesting ideas shared during the visit was about the relationship between posture and comfort. According to Simmons’ design philosophy, the ideal mattress should allow the spine to maintain an alignment that closely resembles the body’s natural posture. Instead of forcing the sleeper into a predetermined position, the mattress should respond to the body’s geometry, distributing pressure where needed while providing differentiated support in different areas.

This explains the company’s focus on pocket spring systems available in different heights and configurations, combined with carefully selected materials that work together rather than independently. Comfort, in this context, is not just about softness – it is the result of balance, support and adaptability, achieved through design decisions that remain almost completely invisible to the user.

Because choosing a mattress is more complicated than choosing furniture

Probably the biggest misconception surrounding mattresses is the idea that there is a universally “best” solution. In fact, body weight, height, sleeping position, age, lifestyle and personal sense of comfort all affect the performance of a mattress. Two people sharing the same bed can require completely different levels of support, making the purchase process much less straightforward than consumers often expect.

This is precisely why Simmons places great emphasis on personalized advice through its network of single-brand stores throughout Italy. Rather than presenting customers with a catalog of products, the company approaches mattress selection as a process of understanding individual needs before identifying the most suitable sleep system. In many ways, this makes layer design one of the purest forms of performance design.

Success is measured not by what users notice when they first encounter the product, but by what they no longer notice after a full sleep: discomfort, pressure points or poor body support. It’s a reminder that not every essential design solution is necessary. Some of the more sophisticated ones simply disappear into everyday life, quietly improving it without asking to be seen.

Good design continues to work while we sleep

Perhaps this is why sleep deserves a more prominent place in the design conversation. If good design ultimately aims to improve people’s lives, then few products have the potential to impact our everyday well-being as profoundly as the one we spend nearly a third of our lives using. So visiting Simmons was less about discovering how layers are made and more about recognizing how design thinking can extend into moments we rarely associate with design at all.
