How to use water storage crystals for summer containers

Keeping pots and hanging baskets watered during a hot summer can seem like a full-time job. You make the rounds with the can first and by afternoon the baskets are dry at the edges and leaning. Heat waves push it twice a day, and smaller pots wilt quickly if you skip one.

Fixing doesn’t have to mean rearranging your day. A bit of know-how for when to water container plants goes a long way, and so does a soil additive called water storage crystals. They mix into the compost, hold moisture in the root zone and release it as things dry out. Containers stay moist longer between waterings, which is the whole point. They won’t replace a watering can, but they take the edge off the daily grind.
