Thistle & Bloom Boutique Hotel is shaped by a multi-layered narrative
Conceived by Hazel Yu, Thistle & Bloom redefines the boutique hotel as an immersive hospitality environment informed by the narrative world of Thumbelina. Conceived as a sequence of interconnected spaces, the conceptual project combines storytelling, lighting and spatial design to create a hospitality experience shaped by gradual discovery and atmospheric transitions. Winding circulation routes, hidden lounge areas and a lily-inspired lobby create a setting that draws themes from the fairy tale while translating them into a contemporary interior environment.
The project explores the hotel not just as a place of residence, but as a spatial journey. Inspired by the story and visual language of Thumbelina, the design process focused on translating key narrative moments into architectural experiences. Instead of directly recreating scenes from the fairy tale, the project extracts the underlying themes and emotions associated with specific episodes and transforms them into spatial and material interventions.
Several chapters of the story informed the overall design framework, including the swamp, the underground tunnel, and the injured swallows sequence. These references became starting points for exploring ideas related to desire, control, vulnerability, survival and concealment. Existing architectural conditions also influenced the layout. Working around a central lift core, the design introduces two spiral corridors that wrap around the central zone of the building, creating a sense of progression and gradual revelation throughout the interior.

immersive interiors shaped by story-based spatial fragments;
The lobby acts as the primary narrative space. At its center is a sunken conversation pit inspired by the swamp scene from Thumbelina, reinterpreted as a lily-like gathering place. Elongated built-in planters surround the space, partially projecting the views and creating a multi-layered relationship between visitors and vegetation. The arrangement encourages movement within the space while enhancing the immersive qualities of the work.
Adjacent hospitality spaces continue the narrative framework from designer Hazel Yu. A cocktail bar draws inspiration from the underground tunnel sequence, translating the arched spatial language of the story into the ceiling design. Opposite, a semi-open living room references the wounded swallow chapter through a birdcage-inspired structure. Rather than acting as a literal interpretation, the enclosure explores the tension between protection and containment, reflecting recurring themes within the story. The work’s visual identity is shaped by a palette of deep greens and purples drawn from various illustrated and cinematic renditions of Thumbelina. Darker tones contribute to a cinematic atmosphere while maintaining the characteristics of a contemporary boutique hotel. Metallic accents are incorporated throughout the interiors, introducing reflections and subtle shifts of light throughout the space.
Beyond the common areas, the guest rooms continue the narrative approach. The bedroom concept references Thumbelina’s walnut-shell bed, translating its visual qualities into a built form that combines enclosure, comfort and symbolism. This interpretation informed the development of a recessed bed element reminiscent of both canopy beds and crown-like silhouettes. Rounded corners and offset geometries extend throughout the room, creating continuity with the traffic flow strategies established elsewhere in the project. As in the lobby, the layout is designed to be revealed gradually rather than all at once.

Thistle & Bloom redefines the boutique hotel through narrative-driven spatial design
circulation as a narrative device in a multi-layered hosting space
A notable aspect of the play is its use of traffic as a narrative device. The winding paths that surround the central lobby are enhanced by built-in planters that divide the views and create moments of partial visibility between passengers. The resulting spatial experience emphasizes movement, anticipation and multi-layered perspectives. Above the central conversation pit, a large dome introduces a vertical focal point that works with the sunken floor to reinterpret classical spatial hierarchy in a contemporary hospitality environment.
One of the main design challenges involved translating a widely recognized fairy tale into architectural language without relying on literal representation. The process required the organization of narrative references in spatial, material and formal strategies capable of supporting both functionality and atmosphere. Through the development of multiple studies, reports and iterations, the project explores how storytelling can inform contemporary hospitality design while maintaining architectural coherence.
The central sunken lobby remains one of the defining elements of the proposal, linking the project back to one of the most recognizable environments in history while creating a distinct spatial identity. Combined with hidden views, inclusive circulation and thematic references embedded throughout the interior, the project examines how narrative-driven design can shape the experience of movement, perception and discovery in a hotel environment.
