When we have it at home an area with a loft and we want to make it livable It seems obvious to say, but it isn’t, some permissions are needed.
Let’s see in detail what you need to know and above all what steps must be taken. Scroll through the following lines and note.
What to ask to make the attic livable
If we are lucky enough to have attic space at home we can use it in a thousand different ways. It could be done a bedroom, a living room or a study or relaxation area. This is where our home gains value, which is never bad, on the contrary!

Obviously, as in all things, There are permits that must be requested to make this space habitable. The procedures we must follow require the intervention of certain professionals, as an interior designer but above all an architect and engineer if we want to work on load-bearing structures.
However, let’s start by saying that to make an attic livable there are very precise technical parameters established by building regulations. The first is height. The minimum should be 270 cm, but can drop to 240 for bathrooms and corridors. The average height and weight must be at least 240.
In some areas of our beautiful peninsula there are exceptions, especially after the Save Home Ordinance of 2024. The air-to-light ratio is also very important. The window area should be at least 1/8 or 1/10 of the floor area. This is to ensure adequate lighting.
Obviously, if it is necessary to create new openings or create a pocket terrace, a check is necessary to establish the bearing capacity of the floor and its effect on the building. Obviously, Technical aspects are also followed by bureaucratic ones which may vary from municipality to municipality.
But, in general, if for example we live in a condominium we need the council’s consent before we can proceed. Then the architect executing the project must draw up and present to SKIA Municipality, a Certified Activity Start Report or, if we need to carry out significant interventions, a Building Permit.
The practice should have an extremely detailed report and signed by an engineer with any landscape considerations if the aesthetic appearance of the building is changed. Once we complete these practices we can start work. These interventions can help us to create space where it is not better used.
So if you also have a belt loft that you want to transform, remember that there are rules to follow and permits and projects to present in order to comply and not have any kind of problem.
