Texture is a unique aspect of design in that it cannot be felt with the eyes alone – or maybe it can. Our brains are so wired to understand our environment on an immediate basis that those who practice will report feeling the same sensations they see. MUHLY they are experts in texture, skillfully transforming material designs into familiar shapes and configurations, with a certain twist. The studio is proud to present its latest tracks, Dekko, Cup and the Prairie Pendant. The project is developed collaboratively: each piece handcrafted to order, the glossy shine of oxidized copper meets the warmth of cherry boards, crafted in either Austin, TX or Philadelphia, PA.
Vintage cabinets from around 1930 make their influence known on the Bon console, with extrusions and chrome metal details that are quite charming in the range. The extrusions match the inset circles in an almost button-like fashion, reminiscent of the days when buttons were mechanically operated.
The Dekko collection is inspired by early 19th century designs produced in the Western USA. The wide skirt and holes bring a certain vigor to the chair, visually reliable and durable. Simplicity and honesty in form is intentional – there is a quiet confidence in something done well.
The Prarie Pendant is reminiscent of many patterns in nature, the galvanized steel impressions create either raised or concave marks, depending on the direction. An ode to the perforated tin lamps from their childhood in Texas, the light is cast both down through the square, up through the shadow, and out through the perforation marks, dots of light that decorate the space.
The Pokal collection is inspired by the work of Jean Royère, who appreciated style and style in a way that combines many of his designs. Anticipating the shift towards the organism, his biomorphic pieces continue to inspire designers to this day. Celebrating natural growth is a strong theme in the MUHLY catalog, reflecting not only nature, but holding a mirror up to ourselves.
Led by Megan Carney and Ann Edgerton, MUHLY was founded in 2021, crafting handcrafted furniture that brings an effortless simplicity and longevity to the home. A central question guides their process: “what makes us feel connected, comfortable and caring in our own environment”? Designed to fit the changing spaces and seasons of life, the pieces are infused with an originality that stands out, with construction that makes the pieces stick.
