On July 15, 2026, OpenAI released its first piece of branded hardware: not the rumored AI companion device it’s developed with former Apple design chief Jonathan Ive, but a compact keyboard made in collaboration with a specialist keyboard manufacturer Work harder.
It’s called the Codex Microand has been developed specifically for coders using OpenAI’s Codex agents and language model, allowing them to submit jobs faster and improve management. While a keyboard has always been the interface between a human’s work and a machine’s execution, this device reverses the relationship: the machine now produces the literal work, and the human’s work is supervisory.
How it works
The device is structurally a macro pad built for shortcuts, with 13 mechanical switches along with a joystick, a rotary dial and a touch sensor. It’s made of CNC polycarbonate and aluminum, with a sandblasted anodized bottom, connects via Bluetooth or USB-C, and runs on Mac or Windows.
Device functions have three parts. First, a bank of what are called Agent Keys, which light up with a live RGB state from Codex, so users can check at a glance if a particular agent is idle, thinking, running, or waiting for you, without opening the app. Second, a set of programmable command keys that map to the actions developers use most when talking to agents, such as simply accepting or rejecting. Third, a joystick and rotary dial for more analog control, where the joystick is used to initiate common Codex workflows, while the dial allows the user to adjust the agent’s “reasoning level” according to simple or complex tasks.


The Work Louder partnership
Work Louder is a small, niche maker of programmable macro pads designed for streamers, editors, and other creative professionals who need natural shortcuts to optimize their workflow. The Codex Micro’s chassis comes directly from the company’s Creator Micro series, which already offered mechanical keys, joysticks, dials, and touch control long before OpenAI got involved.
Instead of building a keyboard from scratch, the AI company partnered with a team that had already spent years refining its design approach, like when Figma partnered with the same company to produce its custom keyboard. This isn’t OpenAI’s groundbreaking entry into industrial design, but it’s closer to a limited-edition collaboration with borrowed manufacturing.


Where is Jonathan Ive?
While many developers may be happy about the release of the Codex Micro, the design world has been waiting for the much talked about collaboration with Ive, which is supposed to take the form of a companion device without a screen. So why release this keyboard now if such an important project was on the way?
The release was a surprise to them technical purchase, especially as it arrived weeks later OpenAI’s The CEO of Apps reportedly told staff not to be distracted by “side quests,” a limited-use innovation keyboard strange thing at the green light.
Codex Micro feels less like a product launch and more like an experiment: a cheap, low-risk way for the company to learn what it’s like to design, build, ship, and support a physical object, enabling supply chains, warranties, customer service, and all the nitty-gritty logistics of getting a product out into the world in order to prepare it all before a device.
