Smart living and material innovation : DesignWanted

If you want to understand where the built environment is going — not in five years, but now, in terms of materials, construction, smart systems and spatial planning — Guangzhou CBD it is one of the most useful places on earth to spend four days.

THE China (Guangzhou) International Building Decoration Exhibitionnow in its 28th edition, it takes place from 8 to 11 July 2026 at the Canton Fair Complex in Guangzhou Pazhou, and its scale and structural ambition make it a truly different proposition from the European trade fairs our community will be more familiar with.

This is not a curated showcase of finished interiors. It’s something closer to a living cross-section of an entire industry — from the ceramics and sanitary ware that define a bathroom, to the facade systems and solar technologies that shape a building’s relationship with climate and light, to the automation systems and smart manufacturing technologies that define how it’s built. For designers, architects, contractors and anyone working at the intersection of interior design and construction, the density of what makes the Guangzhou CBD a place is, quite simply, hard to find elsewhere.

Three ecosystems, one cohesive vision

The 2026 edition is organized around three distinct but interconnected industrial ecosystems — INTERIOR, EXTERNALand MATECH — each addresses a specific level of the building and living environment and together form a complete picture of where the industry is headed.

INTERIOR (Area A) is the creative and lifestyle-based core of the exhibition. It covers smart home technologies — connected lighting, smart security, home automation, artificial intelligence systems and whole-home solutions — along with whole-home personalization, decorative surfaces, advanced coatings and a dedicated section for ceramics, sanitary ware and home renovation technologies developed in cooperation with the China Chamber of Commerce Importers of Metal & Exportals, Chemicals. For a design audience, this is the area that most directly maps to the questions we face every day: how materials perform, how spaces are personalized, and how technology is absorbed into domestic life without being announced.

EXTERNAL (Area D) addresses the architectural envelope — doors, windows, facade systems, sunshades, aluminum solutions and outdoor applications. It is an area that has moved significantly in recent years, as the boundaries between interior and exterior become increasingly fluid in contemporary architecture and as energy efficiency requirements reshape what a facade is expected to do. What CBD Guangzhou offers here is not forecasting trends but sourcing the reality: the builders and systems that actually build the next generation of buildings, at scale.

MATECH (Area B) is arguably the most talked about part of the exhibition from a design point of view and the most instructive. Dedicated to the supply chain behind whole-home furnishing and building decoration — advanced materials, engineered hardware, automation systems, smart manufacturing, next-generation machinery — it charts the industrial transformation that makes everything else possible. Digitization and smart manufacturing systems are reshaping how things are made, at what cost and with what environmental footprint. MATECH puts this transformation on the floor.

A platform built for global business

What gives the Guangzhou CBD special relevance for an international design and architecture community is the deliberate structure it has built around cross-border professional exchanges. The 2026 edition will host buyer delegations from more than 30 countries and regions alongside procurement matching sessions, international media tours, global industry forums and International CBD World-Connect evening networking event. Architects, designers, contractors, developers, distributors and buyers from Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the Americas are expected to attend.

Six professional channels — Dealers, Designers, Decorators, Foreign Dealers, Public Architectural Institutions and New Media — structure the way the fair connects its exhibitors with their most relevant audiences. For a designer or architect looking to source materials, understand construction potential, or identify partners in the Chinese market, this level of structural organization is what separates a productive visit from an overwhelming one.

Because it matters to our community

The discussion around smart living, sustainable materials and the future of the built environment tends to happen, in our world, at the level of concepts and case studies. Guangzhou CBD it happens at the production level — the companies, materials and technologies that will actually deliver the next decade of interiors and architecture on a global scale.

For anyone whose practice intersects with procurement, specification, or the broader question of where design and manufacturing meet, it’s a rare opportunity to see this ecosystem in its entirety and engage with it directly. The 28th edition, with its expanded international programming and three-ecosystem structure, makes this opportunity more accessible than ever.
