PLNLstudio transforms the sewage tank into a sophisticated living space
PLNLstudio based in Rotterdam transforms a former sewage tank in Trommel apartment no. 4 in Amsterdam. This flat located on the first floor of a unique building designed by SeARCH architects. an impressive example of adaptive reuse, where ex concrete Storage tanks from a sewage treatment plant have been converted into modern living spaces. From the beginning, the design approach aimed to embrace the building’s unconventional geometry and raw material, integrating the apartment into its architectural context. The material palette reflects this intention with concrete floors, bespoke furniture that echoes the frame tones and reflective stainless steelsteel elements that bring light and functionality to the space. Together, these ingredients form a consistency interior which complements the original structure. Given the compact footprint, the layout was developed with great care. Several iterations were explored to arrive at a configuration that exactly met the customer’s needs. Creating a comfortable workspace and maximizing storage were top priorities.

Curved geometries and diffused light define TROMMEL no.4
The final solution provides generous, well-integrated storage space while maintaining a sense of openness, achieved through built-in wardrobes and discreet compartments below a custom-designed seating area. The seats follow the curvature of the wall, making the most of the available space and offering a more efficient use of square footage than standard rectangular options. Access to natural light was another important consideration. Daylight was introduced not only into the main living spaces, but also into normally closed spaces such as the bathroom and walk-in closet. Glass doors and internal windows were incorporated to allow light to flow throughout the apartment while maintaining privacy through translucent glazing with integrated metal mesh. Although the ceiling height is modest, these interventions create a surprisingly generous sense of space. The project by practical architecture and interior design PLNLstudio owes its success to the open-mindedness of the clients, who trusted the design process and contributed many great ideas of their own. It is a powerful example of how careful design and clear collaboration can deliver a high-quality result, even on a modest budget.
