The mestiz creates wicker creatures for Hermès windows throughout Mexico

Mestizo’s woven world of flowers, animals and strange creatures

Mexican design studio MESTIZ turns wicker into a medium of storytelling, revealing a new family handmade creatures for the future Hermes window facilities throughout Mexico. Large flowers sprout from striped planters, butterflies hover next to violet elephants, crabs hold bright red bags and fish can be seen swimming through fields of tulips. The collection forms an imaginary ecosystem where familiar objects abandon their everyday roles and take on playful personalities, like children’s book characters, turning wicker into a medium of storytelling.

These expressive creatures are set to occupy Hermès windows across Mexico, bringing the woven worlds of MESTIZ from the workshop to the street. Large flowers emerge from striped planters, bags sprout at feet, while butterflies, birds, elephants and sea creatures share the same fantastical landscape. Exaggerated proportions and saturated colors draw from the language of folklore and children’s imagination.

The project also shows how far the studio it can push the material beyond its known forms. The same woven wicker forms flower petals, butterfly wings, elephant trunks and crab claws, creating a range of characters from a single material.

The pieces are designed as part of a single environment, within which each creature appears to interact with the next, encouraging passers-by to imagine the scene as a living world.
