Club Marginal Architects is renovating the 1891 house in Berlin
Located at Berlin district Friedrichshagen, Friedi & Hagen is the renovation of a semi-independent home originally built in 1891 in a protected urban conservation area. The project, designed by Club Marginal Architekten, focuses on restoring the building’s historic proportions while reorganizing the interior to accommodate modern family living.
The loft structure was completely rebuilt and expanded through the addition of dormitories, increasing the usable space on the upper level. Externally, the facade has been restored with windows incorporating the original bar configuration, while many architectural elements have been reintroduced to enhance the historic composition and scale of the building.

Oak veneer, travertine and pine define the Materials palette
The interior modifications reorganize the middle floor as a special space for the family’s two children. Each room incorporates a mezzanine designed for play and additional occupation, as well as a private bathroom with built-in furniture finished in a rich orange tone. The spatial layout introduces vertical layering while maintaining continuity between built-in elements and circulation.
The upper loft level has been designed as the parents’ private space. Adjacent to the bedroom, a large bathroom incorporates a sauna and is defined through a restrained material palette of oak veneer and travertine. A free-standing vanity is the central element of the space, while the storage volumes and cupboards are integrated into the surrounding wall cladding to maintain spatial continuity.
Throughout the home, newly installed flooring combines oiled pine with linoleum surfaces, establishing a consistent material language throughout the renovated interior. The intervention of Club Marginal Architekten Studio balances restoration, spatial reconfiguration and material integration within the historic residential structure.
