Yabu Pushelberg-Designed Onuki Restaurant opens in Athens

The similarities between Japan and Greece may not seem so obvious, but if there’s one design studio capable of assembling a myriad of elements from these difficult, ancient, and not just defined cultures, it’s a Toronto- and New York-based firm Yabu Pushelberg. The practice of more than four decades has made the distillation, interpretation and combination of distinctive touch points characteristic of what he has achieved in all typologies: from full-scale residences and hotels to restored sofas.

With its complete application just opened Onuki Restaurant in the all-new Illyrian oasis-in-the-city destination, the distinct aesthetic elements play off the transcendental points of connection of both historically established countries. Beyond that, the multifaceted Athens venue celebrates the appreciation for well-crafted cuisine and carefully orchestrated dining experiences that Japan and Greece share.

“In the realm of Japanese cuisine and refined hospitality, Onuki stands for integrity, consistency in craftsmanship and depth of precision,” notes George Yabu, co-founder of Yabu Pushelberg. “These characteristics are conveyed through design, food and service, all working together. The precision inherent in the chef’s creations and subtly attentive service are enhanced by an interior that is crafted with the same level of intention.”

There is a delicate balance of past and present, structure and play, refined tectonic articulation and detailed texture. Light and shadow move through a skillful deployment of intricate woven screens, ceiling-dropping sculptures and mirrored surfaces. The almost cinematic effect extends from the open kitchen to the seamlessly integrated pool terrace and to the second level private dining rooms.

There is definitely a theatrical sequence. Upon entering, one is greeted by bright geometric light fixtures that accentuate the dark wood details. Tile patterns are carried throughout the space, marking yet another point of connection between Greece and Japan. An almost orange version of terracotta wraps the bar and contrasts the indigo accents and light limestone found outdoors.

Curated by chef and co-owner Stamatis Scriapas, the ever-changing menu interprets various Japanese staples with mostly umami-flavored ingredients found in the surrounding Athens area. Every aspect of Onuki reflects the spirit of ‘Kizuna’, the enduring connection between chef and guest, season and dish, and the seamless blend of tradition and modernity.
